Highlights of the Chattanooga Adventure

Chattanooga has proved to be a wealth of learning opportunities for schools who use Tours That Teach. Its close proximity to the Atlanta area makes it possible for us to offer a day trip package, however, there are so many venues in Chattanooga, we also can offer a 2 or 3 day adventure. As always, Tours That Teach will customize your trip to parallel your curriculum. Some of the highlights of our Chattanooga Adventure include a hands on class at the Tennessee Wildlife Center and a tour of the cave at Ruby Falls. We also visit the Tennessee Aquarium, a must see attraction in Chattanooga.

Tennessee Wildlife Center

Tennessee Wildlife Center is an environmental education facility featuring wildlife exhibits, a scent garden, a children's discovery room, a 1,700-foot Wetland Walkway, and a wildlife rehabilitation clinic. At the Wildlife Center, students will take a class on birds of prey in which they will be introduced to several raptors and participate in a hands on lab of dissecting owl pellets. Hundreds of birds, reptiles, and mammals are brought to the center each year for rehabilitative care. Among the animals who have been rescued and brought to the center are a great horned owl, a barn owl, a screech owl, a redtailed hawk and a pair of endangered red wolves.

Ruby Falls

Far beneath Lookout Mountain is a series of caves that lead to the magnificently beautiful Ruby Falls. Students will be taken on a guided tour of the caves, learning about stalactite and stalagmite and other rock formations along the way caused by mineral deposits. They will also be told the history of the caves. But, the truly amazing feature of the Lookout Mountain caves is not the many and varied formations which you see, but rather in the large vertical shaft at the end of the main passage. A flowing underground stream falls from the very top of this shaft 145 feet into a pool on the floor of the cave. The size of the waterfall depends on the amount of rainfall. Water from Ruby Falls flows back through the cave and then down another waterfall (which is inaccessible) and into the Tennessee River.

The Tennessee Aquarium

This is a must see venue on the Chattanooga Adventure. At the Tennessee Aquarium, the world's largest freshwater aquarium, students will be able to journey through a 60 ft. canyon and 2 live forests. Home to over 9,000 animals and 575 species of fish, the Tennessee Aquarium offers students the rare opportunity to see animals in their natural habitit. They will follow the Tennessee River from its Appalachian beginnings through the swamp waters of the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way they will see fish, crustaceans, mussels, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals in their fresh water ecosystems. Depending on our schedule, students will also have an opportunity to see one of the following 3D movies at the Aquarium's IMAX theater; T-Rex, Dolphins or Extreme.

Chicamauga Battlefield
Our nation's first National Military Park, established in 1890, honors the Civil War soldiers that fought for control of Chattanooga at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 and the Battles for Chattanooga in November 1863. Site of the bloodiest two-day battle of the Civil War, Chicamauga National Military Park celebrated its' 100th birthday in 1990. A seven mile loop tour features markers and monuments placed by states after the war. A longer 12-mile tour is also available. The park office, a beautiful glass edifice with a multimedia presentation also houses the Fuller Gun Collection containing 355 weapons. An older office built by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at the turn of the century is nearby and can be seen on the tour.

Creative Discovery Museum
Tours That Teach has found the Creative Discovery Museum to be a great place for children to discover themselves and the world they live in. Hands-on, interactive arts and science exhibits challenge children to explore, create and learn. What would it be like to be an artist? A musician? A scientist? An inventor? Children can see for themselves by being themselves, recording a song, sculpting a masterpiece, building a robot, or excavating fossilized dinosaur bones. That1s what1s so unique about the Creative Discovery Museum. By exciting children1s interest, the exhibits accelerate learning. This is one of our most exciting and stimulating activities on the Chattanooga Adventure.
